The Michigan Equal Pay Coalition is working to raise awareness of the wage gap between men and women and call for action from policymakers. Equal Pay Day was originated in Michigan by the Michigan Pay Equity Network and adopted by the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) in 1996 as a public awareness event to illustrate the gap between men’s and women’s wages. Equal Pay Day is held on a Tuesday in April to symbolize how far into 2014 women must work to earn what men earned the year before. Tuesday is the day of the week on which women’s wages catch up to men’s wages from the previous week. This day of recognition demonstrates there is still a pay gap between women’s and men’s wages. People wear red on Equal Pay Day to symbolize that women and minorities are “in the red” with regard to their pay. The Equal Pay Coalition welcomes organizations who support our purpose - to end sex- and race-based wage disparities. Currently there are over 15 member organizations. AAUW, NOW, and the LWV volunteers administer the Coalition. MI Equal Pay Coalition advocates for pay equity and the economic security for Michigan women.
